Hotel Rea

The Hotel Rea found at 207 West State Street is full of amazing history it was founded in in 1898 by E.A. Rea. In the later 1900’s it was abandoned until Malisha and Josh Hagan decided to renovate it in 2015. After 3 years of hard work they were finally able to open on August 23, of 2018 It was a very time consuming and grueling process, but the Hotel Rea is back to its former glory. The Hotel Rea is now used as overnight lodging and can be used as an event space. Each room seems to have its own unique charm. There are many pieces of history in the hotel such as the busts that were bought from a travelling salesman in the early 1900’s to celebrate the wedding of E.A. and Irene Rea. That were graciously donated by Nancy Coates. Also, the authentic Victrola that was donated by a close friend of the great grand daughter of E.A Rea. The Architecture as a mix of Victorian and mid-century design so the guests can get the authentic feel of the old Hotel Rea with some modern luxuries. The inside was very beautiful it really made you feel like you were in a first-class hotel. For more information you can contact Malisha Hagan at 641-895-6074 or at Malish@protoproperties.net It’s a once in a lifetime experience!

Share the history behind your business.

In 2006 I got my Real Estate and Brokers licence in 2008 opening Hicks Realty LLC. Real estate was not something I thought I’d ever do but it allowed for flexible hours so I could be available for my family. It was one of the best decisions I could have made. I have established a name of trust and honesty, hard work in the community.

What differentiates your from you competitors?

Real Estate is my fulltime job. I work from home giving me the flexibility to coach, farm, and attend my son R.C’s events. I enjoy being involved with the community. My personality and ability to get along with people seems to help me get many of my listings and sales. I work with people and can be flexible with commission rates in certain circumstances. I pride myself on being ethical and honest. It all comes back to you, so you have no problems looking in the mirror or sleeping at night.

What community organizations are you involved with?

Chamber of Commerce, Corydon Community Development, Farm Bureau, Wayne Community Foundation, Corydon Community Development Corporation, and coaching golf for the boys and girls Varsity, J.V., and junior high teams

How do you see your business growing or changing in the next 5 years?

I would like to keep up with what I am currently doing, continue to please clients, and grow my established business.

Inn of the Six Toed Cat

Share the history behind the Inn.

The Inn was built in 1909 for the purpose of a hotel. In 1989 Mr. Findlay renovated and restored the hotel. It was then renamed the Inn of the Six-Toed Cat. Opening that year for the Christ mas season.

Kay Boam and her neice, Celeste Bivin currently own and operate the inn.

What does your business offer?

We are a bed and breakfast. We serve as a unique place to kick back and relax away from the cares of daily life. We offer long term rates for those working temporaraily in the area. Also, we cater to hunters in the fall and early winter. The Inn is a wonderful place to host various group meetings and activities.

At the Inn, we cater any type of brunch, lunch or dinner that someone may want. This includes reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. We will cater off site if a kitchen is available.

What differentiates you from your competitors

The uniqueness of the restored hotel and the hospitality of the owners. The good food, which is prepared for the most part from scratch. We have the ability to host an event that is specific to any group whether casual, or formal or anything in between.

What community organizations are you involved in?

  • The chamber and it’s activities
  • Wayco Arts Council
  • Volunteering at the Corydon theater
  • Old Time Soda Fountain
  • Hosting bible studies at the Inn for the Christian Church and Clio Baptist Church

How do you see your business growing or changing in the next 5 years?

We are currently setting up an online marketing system that we foresee as bringing new people to the area. This will include highlighting places of interest in Wayne county with a “concierge” type weekend package.

Wayne County Historical Society was formed as an organization in August 1942 at Corydon Old Settlers. Artifacts were displayed at the courthouse in cases located in the basement until 1964. At that time, a new court house was built which lead the Historical Society to purchase ground on the east edge of Corydon for construction of a building. The Wayne County Historical Museum opened to the public July 6th, 1966. Since that time, there have been several
expansions. The museum campus now includes three buildings that house the history of Wayne County with a large collection of faming artifacts. The exhibits displayed tell the story of Wayne County’s development from the mid 1800s through present day. Prairie Trails Museum is one of the largest small town museums in Iowa. There is one fulltime employee, Brenda DeVore, and nearly 40 volunteers. The museum’s board of directors is a committee of 16 members who live in all parts of the county. They are all active and involved in many organizations in Wayne County. Looking to the future, the museum would like to continue adding exhibits and improving the Genealogy Library.
